March 29, 2007: Federal Court Rules That Horse Slaughter Is Illegal

Last February, we were all stunned to learn that the USDA had accepted a “fee-for service” petition from the horse slaughter plants allowing them to continue operating after the US Congress had voted to prohibit federal funding for horse slaughter inspection. However, late last night a U.S. Federal Court handed down a decision stating that the USDA was not in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and that they cannot continue to accept payments from the slaughter plants.

Though two Texas horse slaughter plants have already been effectively shut down due to a Texas State law, this ruling has forced the last of the 3 slaughter plants in the U.S., Illinois based Cavel International, to close its doors as well. We have reports that truckloads of horses have been turned away at Cavel today.

Equine rescue organizations are working to find temporary and permanent housing for the hundreds of horses that were in the slaughter pipeline at Cavel. It is unclear whether the horses will be handed over to rescue organizations for placement but we need to be ready if they are.

Return to Freedom is working to find land and other resources to help rescue any mustangs found in the slaughter pipeline. WE NEED YOUR HELP! If you are able to help through donating use of your land, taking horses, or helping to fund transportation please respond to this email with your name, contact information, facility information, and how you would like to help.

Though this is an incredible victory, we still need to get the federal legislation passed to prevent American horses from being shipped to Canada or Mexico for slaughter. Let’s keep the momentum going! Please contact your Members of Congress today and urge them to support The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act HR 503 and S 311. You can find your Congressional representatives at www.house.gov and www.senate.gov.

On behalf of the horses, thank you.
