Two Ponies

Two Ponies is a beautiful, painted mare from Return to Freedom's Calico herd. This lucky mare is one of over 80 mares rescued by Return to Freedom after the devastating Calico roundup in the Calico Mountains Complex of Northwest Nevada. Over 1900 wild horses were rounded up, driven by helicopter for miles over treacherous, rocky terrain in the dead of winter to a small holding pen where they would be forever separated from their home, their families and their freedom.

Sorted, processed and sent to auction lots around the country, many of these horses were made available to the public for the bargain basement price of $10. An American Icon sold for less than the cost of a theatre ticket. . .

In an effort to restore some of what was lost to as many as we could, Return to Freedom purchase over 100 horses from the Calico roundup. These horses will be the first to run free at a pioneering wild horse conservancy we are creating in the western United States. We are in negotiations to purchase land that will give these horses a permanent home to live out their lives without further threat or removal.

We can only hope that, among the horses we rescued, Two Ponies will be reunited with a family or herd member that she knew in the wild. If not, she will have the opportunity to form a new band. One that she will never again be ripped away from. This special horse was named after the marking on her side that looks like distinctly like a horse head. Your sponsorship will help cover the cost of feed and care for Two Ponies.
