Over 1300 wild horses have been removed from the Calico Complex in Nevada to date. After having been herded by helicopter for miles over snowy and rocky terrain, foals, older horses and pregnant mares are suffering the brunt of this cruelty.

It was not long ago that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced a proposal to euthanize some 30,000 wild horses that they have stockpiled in federal holding facilities, due to budget constraints. This overstock of horses is a result of years of gathering more wild horses from the range than the agency could successfully place through their adoption program.

On Friday, September 21st, the US Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit ruled in favor of the constitutionality of the recent Illinois State law that was passed, banning the slaughter of horses for human consumption in the State of Illinois.

The slaughter of America's wild and domestic horses is a horrific reality that continues despite closure of the U.S. based slaughter plants. Last year, over 100,000 American horses were slaughtered in plants in Canada and Mexico.
