Meet Blizzard

Blizzard is a beautiful sorrel gelding with a flaxen mane and tail. Blizzard was a dominant stallion and after his capture in 2015, he was gelded and still maintains his dominant personality. He is bold and opinionated, he sticks close to his friends from the Cold Creek herd, protecting and of course pushing his friends around!

In the April 2016, Blizzard and nine other colourful horses from the Cold Creek herd arrived to Return to Freedom’s sanctuary in San Luis Obispo California where they live freely on 2000 acres of rolling oak-studded hills along with 60 other mustangs and 16 burros.

In September 2015, the Bureau of Land Management did an emergency roundup of 201 horses known as the Cold Creek Herd in the Wheeler Pass Herd Management Area. The horses were extremely thin and lethargic due to lack of forage on the range. Local advocates who know these horses well, plead with the agency for years to allow them to help manage the population with fertility control so that the range could better support the herd.

Just over 400 wild horses and burros roamed in the Spring Mountains near the small mountain village of Cold Creek, near Las Vegas. Some of the horses became favorites of locals and tourists, often being fed from passersby as they ambled along the side of the road.

These horses are the descendants of horses who escaped from horse traders in the 1800s, and those abandoned over the years by Native Americans, settlers, ranchers and mining prospectors
