Meet Francis

Francis is a young member of Return to Freedom’s Choctaw herd, a very special herd of horses at our sanctuary. Born on November 11th, 2009, this special filly is the daughter of Chief Iktinike and Ricochet’s Doll, a wild and wise grey mare.

The ancestors of today’s Choctaw horses carried Choctaw Indian families on the tragic Trail of Tears in the 1830s, where thousands died on a forced march from their homes in Mississippi to Reservations in Oklahoma. Later the horses were almost all exterminated but some were hidden in the mountains of Oklahoma by Indian families.

Francis is a living representative of the history of our nation and the Native American people.
