Meet Willow

Willow was born at Return to Freedom’s American Wild Horse Sanctuary after her dam/mother, Pretty Sky, arrived pregnant with Chief’s band in 2003. Willow is a beautiful liver dun mare with a dorsal stripe that you can see if you look very hard!

Willow grew up in the safety of the sanctuary with other offspring from the Sulphur herd that arrived in 2003 and 2004.

Today, Willow is part of the harem band of Amante, a Cerbat mustang stallion, along with two other mares, Stella and Sasha, as well as her sister Stella’s offspring, Amber, Fuego and Nora. Willow is alert, smart, kind and plays a very nurturing role in her band. In 2012, she gave birth to Corazon. In 2020, she gave birth to a handsome little colt, Cameron!

Willow’s beautiful conformation is a wonderful representation of her Iberian descent. These Sulphur Springs horses are found in Utah in the Sulphur Herd Management Area. Due to their remote location in Utah’s Needle Range, Sulphur Springs wild horses have retained their unique phenotyping. Of all the horses free-ranging in America today, these horses have DNA most similar to the primitive Iberian horses known as the Sorraia being preserved in Portugal today.
