Happy Father’s Day from RTF!

Stallions play with their young and correct inappropriate behaviors. Stallions also work to maintain band cohesion and — ever watchful and alert — place themselves between their families and perceived threats. They are the protectors of the herd.

Amante, left, spends a lot of time with his playful 10-month-old son, Fuego. Fuego loves to tease and provoke his father, then the little rascal displays his submission by “champing,” a behavior in which the younger horse pulls his lips back, opening and only slightly closing his mouth repeatedly. Amante is a patient, attentive father who responds gently to Fuego’s appeasing behavior. Photos by Irene Vejar.
