A Senate win for wild horses!

Dear Wild Horse Advocate,

Good news! The Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday voted to approve a Fiscal Year 2019 Interior Appropriations bill that again includes language that would bar the Bureau of Land Management from killing healthy wild horses and burros or selling them to slaughter.

Thanks to advocates like you who lit up the phones in Washington, we’re a step closer to fending off such inhumane proposals. But there’s still work to be done.

The Senate and House versions of the bill will now move to the floor. Then, Senate and House leaders will meet in conference to work out the differences in their respective spending bills.

Click here to read RTF’s press release with more detail about the Senate bill.

There are significant differences between the two bills because the House Appropriations Committee on June 6 voted to approve an amendment that would give broad leeway to the Secretary of the Interior to create non-reproducing or single-sex herds using tools that include surgical sterilization. That’s unacceptable.

It will be crucially important for us to continue delivering this message to members of both houses. Their constituents demand humane solutions that move the BLM toward a sustainable, long-term plan for on-the-range management that wild horses and burros deserve — and of which all Americans can truly be proud.

Thank you, again, for every call and message you’ve sent calling on our nation’s lawmakers to stand up for America’s wild horses and burros, as well as your continued support of Return to Freedom.
