Ely, NV — The Bureau of Land Management’s Ely District this week gathered 286 horses in eastern Nevada, but the number left on the range far exceeds the agency’s “appropriate management levels” in the area.

A contractor removed 105 horses from outside the Silver King Horse Management Area about 90 miles south of Ely, and 181 from in and around the Triple B management area about 30 miles northwest of Ely.

Hay and water were used to attract the horses for capture, according to the BLM.

The horses were transported to the National Wild Horse and Burro Center at Palomino Valley north of Reno, to be prepared for the BLM’s adoption program.

The federal government’s Appropriate Management Level for the Silver King HMA is 60-128 wild horses, while the current population is 807.

The Triple B has an AML of 250-518 wild horses, and the current population is 1,400-plus.
