The number of American horses exported is on pace to reach its highest total in at least four years — a tragic reminder of why Congress must take action to remove the stain of horse slaughter.

From January through November, at least 19,654 equines were shipped to slaughter in Mexico or Canada. That’s an 11.4% increase, year over year, despite a two-month delay in export figures for Canada. These needless deaths in often inhumane conditions could have been prevented.
