Fiona and Lonesome — friends forever!
There are so many heartwarming stories at our sanctuary!
Here’s a recent one:
When a little fuzzy burro arrived at our sanctuary following the long ride from the Bowie, Texas, auction, we were thrilled to meet him. He and 14 other burros had just escaped a probable death at a sale pen frequented by kill buyers.
But in the first few days, ignored by his travel-mates, we began to worry about him.
We knew we couldn’t let Lonesome be without companionship, which is crucial to the well-being of equines. If the other burros from Texas would not step up in friendship, we had an idea of who would.
A lame jenny we call Fiona had also not bonded with other burros in the group. She needed extra veterinary attention, so we brought her into our main barn so that she and Lonesome could keep each other company.
As soon as we saw them munching on carrots and apples side by side, we knew it would work.
They quickly became so close that we knew they should be together always. We just didn’t know where that would be.
Now we know—and it’s great news!
Our happy twosome and the other rescued burros they arrived with are going to live at a nearby Donkey Sanctuary.
We are so happy to collaborate with the Donkey Sanctuary on this and future programs and rescue missions. After their sanctuary’s new shelter goes up, we will be transporting them all together to their new home!
We’ll miss them all, but they’ll have a great life, and, with your help, we’ll be here when another burro needs us.
Thanks to our supporters, we were able to not only rescue but care for this lonesome mini burro, Fiona and the others, giving them a strong start for their future. After quarantine, they had their hooves trimmed, were wormed and received vaccinations.
We’re grateful to all of our supporters for making this big step on their path to happy lives possible.
