Urgent action needed: The next step in passing the House’s version of the agriculture funding bill is a markup session on May 23 at which members will offer and vote on amendments.
Return to Freedom strongly supports a stand-alone bill permanently banning horse slaughter as well as the export of American horses for slaughter, known as the Save America’s Forgotten Equines Act, but we are always looking for other ways to pass an equine slaughter ban.
Renewed about every five years, the Farm Bill, a trillion-dollar agricultural funding bill, presents one such opportunity.
Unfortunately, we learned this week that the draft House and Senate versions do not yet include the anti-slaughter language for which we’ve been lobbying.
There’s still time to change that.
Here’s how you can take action:
- Please call your members of Congress at (202) 224-3121. Urge them to please express to the House and Senate Agriculture Committees their support for including the SAFE Act to ban horse slaughter in the Farm Bill. If you’re asked for a bill number, the SAFE Act is H.R. 3475 in the House, S. 2037 in the Senate. If you’re unsure who your members of Congress are, please click here.
- It is especially important that those represented by members serving on the House and Senate Ag Committees call Congress. If your representative serves on an agriculture committee (click here and here for membership lists), call the number above and urge that they demand that language banning horse slaughter and the export of horses for slaughter is added to the Farm Bill.
- You can also send a letter to your representative and senators in support of anti-slaughter legislation by tapping Take Action in our bio.
