‘Texas 10’ burro rescue update!

/ In The News, News, Rescues

Not long ago, the Texas Ten—10 burros that ended up at the Bowie Texas feedlot—were fated to be torturously shipped to a Mexican slaughterhouse.

But thanks to our supporters, we were able to say, “Yes, we will help them,” to a colleague who worked tirelessly at the auction to save these ten and many others from a trip over the border.

These nine male jacks and one jenny (female burro) arrived cautious, sweet and curious, and we promised them they won’t be let down ever again.

Now, eight of the jacks, including spindly legged, long-eared buddies Frick and Frack, are off to a forever home at a Northern California sanctuary.

The shy remaining two, Clyde and the lone female Jenny, who is likely pregnant, will join our burro herd at our Lompoc, Calif., headquarters sanctuary.

As with any rescue, the real work—and expense—begins once the animals are with us.

We were not intending to take in more animals right now—with nearly 400 horses and 50 burros, the past couple of years have been difficult, with the price of hay doubling at times. But as soon as we saw their big eyes, confused and hopeful—we couldn’t say no, and–we’re so glad we took the chance!

Can you help with a generous donation today to feed these trusting little fellows and the 50 burros already living at Return to Freedom’s sanctuary?

Your donations at any time are transformed into nutritious hay and supplements and expert veterinary care for our residents, many of whom are seniors, and into the work we do to keep wild horses and burros running free on the range.
